The Murray Family has been farming the land in Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s, Newfoundland and Labrador for 200 years. That original subsistence family farm has evolved into Murray’s Garden Centre, Murray Meadows Farm, and most recently, The Grounds Café — a farm-to-table restaurant and favourite brunch and lunch destination serving up bright, creative meals and decadent baked goods.
Murray Meadows Farm was started on paper way over in Victoria, British Columbia. In 2012, Evan Murray decided to move back to Newfoundland, to his family home & business, Murray’s Garden Centre in Portugal Cove. Brian Kowalski, who started a small scale commercial farm in 2011, quit his job as a political hack and moved with him. The two of them started plowing and building in 2012, and now in 2023, we are going into our eleventh year of production.
Although not certified organic, we strive to use organic and biological interventions when needed and only use inputs and methods that are approved for use on certified organic farms.
A cookbook featuring recipes from The Grounds chef Nick van Mele and stories from the family farm is upcoming from Boulder Books, and will be available for sale on the Food Hub.
